| Breitling USA |
![]() Founded: 1884 Website: www.breitling.com Breitling has created precision timepieces since 1884 when Leon Breitling opened a workshop specializing in chronographs. Breitling instruments for professionals have a long history in the aviation world where accuracy, technical innovation and reliability are critical dating back to 1915 when Gaston Breitling created the first wristwatch chronograph which subsequently provided pilots with their first wrist instrument. In 1923, Breitling develops the first independent chronograph pushpiece, following up in 1934 with the second return-to-zero pushpiece. This invention made it possible to measure several successive short times giving the chronograph its definitive form. Breitling has had a long association with the world of aviation and in 1936 becomes the official supplier to the Royal Air Force. This association continues in the early 1950’s as Boeing, Lockheed and Douglas chose Breitling cockpit clocks along with more than 25 airlines. In 1952, Breitling introduced the Navitimer, a wrist instrument equipped with a circular slide rule, or “navigation computer” which quickly became the favorite among pilots. Breitling developed a space-going version of the Navitimer, the Cosmonaute featuring a 24-hour indication over a single turn of the dial. On May 24, 1962, astronaut Scott Carpenter was the first to test this new instrument in real conditions during his flight aboard the Aurora 7 space capsule. In 1969 Breitling invents the self-winding chronograph movement resulting in a breakthrough for the entire Swiss Watch industry. The Schneider family who took over the business from the Breitling family in 1979 currently owns Breitling. In 1984 the Chronomat is launched and marks the return of the chronograph and has remained Breitling’s best seller ever since. The Breitling Emergency watch with its built-in micro-transmitter has aided in saving the lives of 19 people around the world since its introduction in 1995. The pilots of the Breitling Orbiter wore the Breitling Emergency watch as they successfully circumnavigated the globe in a balloon for the first time in history in 1999. Over the years, Breitling’s obsession with quality and innovation is perpetuated with such technical developments as the SuperQuartz™ movement allowing 100% chronometer certification of its entire product line. |
